Broadcast TV Isn’t Dead

Meagan Fett

Maybe you thought your mom wrote this title or it was clickbait to get you here, but if that was the case you’d be very, very wrong.

As a somewhat cool, twenty-something year old woman, I’ve exhausted every possible platform that even somewhat touches upon digital storytelling – and I have different thoughts on all of them.

I mindlessly scroll through TikTok when I’m bored, buy the same lip liner that my favourite influencer posts on her IG story, and even flip through a magazine every now and then. I may not own a Stanley tumbler or Djerf Avenue pyjamas, but I get the hype.

Through the emergence of video-on-demand streaming platforms (i.e. Netflix, Prime Video, Crave, etc.) we seem to have forgotten the cultural impact that live television has had on society since the beginning of its time.

Sure, as a kid I’d race home to watch Justin Bieber on Ellen, but beyond the typical fangirl’s dedication, we can all remember significant moments in our lives that had our household clutching the remote. From royal weddings, to international political news, and feel-good daytime shows, there is something to captivate anyone.

Now, how does this fit into what we do?

Our job is to make you, your brand, and your business sparkle on the world stage. We do this by targeting your ideal audience and putting you in places they naturally watch/listen to/gravitate towards.
The way to succeed on any platform is to adapt your content and coverage not only to the audience you’re trying to reach, but to the communication channel you’re using to reach them.

Additionally, opting for broadcast opportunities in PR doesn’t mean that your content is exclusively seen through a TV – the marketing and communication minds at practically every network have mastered the art of effective cross-platform content strategies (we’ll dive deeper into this some other time). Basically, pieces of your feature will be recycled across their website, social media platforms, and other relevant channels. Seen, absorbed, and remembered by different audiences because of how it’s being communicated to them.

Broadcast TV is often an experience as well as on-screen entertainment. With its clear CTA’s, personalised touches, and lively presentation, it’s more memorable and impactful than an Instagram story you just happen to scroll across.

Coordinating gift bags for audience members is something I absolutely love and look forward to doing again. Check out some examples below where we shared holiday magic with Purdys Chocolatier on Cityline.
