Fact: the most expensive pizza in the world happens to be Canadian! The “C6” $450 pizza is a Guinness Book of World Records breaker from Steveston Pizza in Richmond, British Columbia and comes topped with loads of Russian caviar among other delicacies of the sea (pictured above*).
But in my books, the pizzas made with love in the comfort of our home on a dark and dreary Sunday evening last weekend were priceless. My hubby, master of the perfect homemade dough, rolled it out onto a semolina-dusted pizza stone – with the help of our little pizzaiola (Italian for female pizza chef). Then a generous ladle of homemade pizza sauce (Italian tomatoes, black olives, olive oil, lots of garlic, Arabic oregano, spice) gets spread across the surface, followed by a generous sprinkling of grated mozzarella. I tried grated feta and it had a deliciously tangy bite to it. After the cheese, we each customized our own pizzas.
Our daughter went with the classic Margherita (minus the basil), pictured top left. I went with smoked prosciutto, green pepper and anchovies and topped it with fresh arugula once removed from the oven (bottom right before and top right after).
At the point that mine was ready, I stopped taking pics. Sadly, nothing to share from the Pizzaiolo himself. Maybe next time, as I’m hoping this becomes our Sunday evening ritual!
