This past weekend, I headed back to Centennial College, the school where I spent last year studying to receive my postgraduate certificate in Corporate Communications & Public Relations. I had been invited to sit on the graduate student panel during the school’s recent open house.
Walking through the doors (of the former Degrassi High!) brought back many memories – all positive and heart-warming. During my time at Centennial – I made many friends with whom I still keep in touch today; I also made connections that have helped shape my career and learned from instructors who are still very invested in my success.
During my program, I thought I had a very clear idea of how the next year would play out. What actually happened was very different. Although not what I was expecting, I am so grateful for where I am – to be here working at elevator, and learning so much along the way.
Seeing all the fresh faces in the audience, eager to learn more about the program that I had put my heart and soul into the year before, made me very excited for them. After reflecting on the past year, I urge any students heading to school next September (and those graduating within the next few months) to keep an open mind about their career and the path it will take.
Nothing ever turns out exactly the way you think it will – and maybe that’s a good thing.
